Die Zeit, in der wir er werden

In the tension between expectation and lived experience, young men wrestle with their identity. They carry images of strength imposed upon them, while at the same time harboring a quiet, often hidden need for vulnerability. Within these in-between spaces, masculinity emerges not as a rigid code, but as an open, fluid terrain – a space of groping, wavering, testing, and continual redefinition.
The work began as an observation of this transitional phase: a moment in which young men simultaneously feel the pressure of societal expectations and yet search for their own inner measure. On one side stand rigid ideals – dominance, achievement, emotional invulnerability. On the other, spaces begin to open in which sensitivity, uncertainty, and ambivalence are allowed to exist. Between these poles, the protagonists move step by step, glance by glance, often stumbling, often feeling their way forward.
The series turns its gaze toward those who do not conform to the traditional image of the superior man: sensitive, vulnerable, at times overwhelmed. They bear the weight of social codes, status ideals, and demands for performance, while inwardly grappling with doubt, experiencing insecurity, and searching for authenticity.
And yet this is more than a portrait of young men. It is a mirror of their generation – one living in societies of transition, a generation learning how to be male without adhering to rigid norms. It navigates uncertainty, discovers strength in vulnerability, and shapes from inner tensions an image of masculinity that is both tender and resilient. An image that is not complete, but in the process of becoming – one that leaves the question of identity open and makes the process itself a site of insight.
